TRIP OUTLINE Trip Overview

Some treks take you to a destination.

This one takes you through an entire Himalayan world.

The Everest Three High Passes Trek begins with a thrilling mountain flight to Lukla, one of the most famous airstrips in the world. From there, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through forests, suspension bridges, stone villages, prayer wheels, and the gateway settlement of Namche Bazaar.

As the journey climbs higher, the landscape becomes more powerful and remote.

The trail moves through Tengboche, Dingboche, and the upper Khumbu before crossing Kongma La Pass — the first great challenge of the expedition. From the top, the views stretch across wild glacier valleys, ridgelines, and the surrounding Himalayan giants.

After reaching Lobuche, the route continues toward Gorakshep and the legendary Everest Base Camp.

Standing at Everest Base Camp is a deeply memorable moment. Surrounded by the Khumbu Glacier, ice formations, and towering Himalayan walls, you feel the true scale of the world’s highest mountain environment.

The next morning brings another unforgettable highlight: Kala Patthar.

At 5,644.5 metres, Kala Patthar offers one of the most famous close-up views of Mount Everest. Sunrise from this viewpoint is one of the most emotional and rewarding moments of the entire trek.

From there, the journey moves into the remote Cho La region.

Crossing Cho La Pass is demanding and adventurous, with rocky terrain, glacier sections, and dramatic mountain scenery. After the pass, the landscape opens toward the Gokyo Valley, home to beautiful turquoise lakes and one of the most peaceful high-altitude settlements in the Everest region.

The final great crossing is Renjo La Pass.

From Renjo La, the view across Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Gokyo Lakes, and the surrounding Himalayan range is breathtaking.

The descent through Lungden, Thame, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla completes a full circuit through the heart of the Khumbu.

This is not simply trekking in Nepal.

This is one of the great Himalayan expeditions.

Is This Trek Right For You?

The Everest Three High Passes Trek is a strenuous and adventurous Himalayan expedition.

It is best suited for travellers with strong fitness, previous hiking experience, good endurance, and a positive attitude toward high-altitude challenge.

This trek includes long walking days, steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, glacier moraine, remote trails, and three high mountain passes above 5,300 metres.

You do not need technical mountaineering experience, but this is more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp trek.

Some sections may require extra care, especially around Cho La Pass where icy or snowy conditions can occur depending on the season.

Most trekking days involve 5–8 hours of walking, with some longer and more demanding days during pass crossings and the Everest Base Camp section.

At Trek O’Clock, our experienced guides support you throughout the journey with steady pacing, rest breaks, hydration reminders, altitude monitoring, and route management.

The goal is not to rush.

The goal is to move safely, confidently, and enjoy the mountain experience.

Trekking Safely Through The High Himalayas

The Everest Three High Passes Trek reaches a maximum elevation of 5,644.5 metres at Kala Patthar.

The route also crosses Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, all above 5,300 metres.

Because of this, altitude awareness and proper acclimatisation are extremely important.

At Trek O’Clock, your safety and comfort remain our highest priorities throughout the journey.

This itinerary includes acclimatisation time in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo to help your body adjust gradually as you move higher into the Himalayas.

Our guides monitor trekkers carefully and encourage a slow, steady rhythm rather than rushing.

Understanding Altitude

As elevation increases, it is normal for some travellers to feel mild symptoms while adjusting to thinner air.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Mild headache
  • Fatigue
  • Light dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Reduced appetite
  • Shortness of breath during exertion

Most mild symptoms improve with rest, hydration, food, and proper acclimatisation.

However, altitude sickness must always be taken seriously.

Trekkers should inform their guide immediately if symptoms appear or worsen.

With proper pacing, preparation, hydration, and professional guidance, this challenging trek can be completed safely and confidently by well-prepared trekkers.

Spring & Autumn Seasons

The best seasons for the Everest Three High Passes Trek are Spring and Autumn.
These periods usually offer the most stable weather, clearer mountain views, and better trekking conditions.
Spring — March To May
Spring brings warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendron forests in lower regions, longer daylight hours, and active trekking energy across the Everest region.
This is also one of the major climbing seasons, so Everest Base Camp may be filled with expedition tents and mountaineering activity.
The mountain atmosphere during spring can feel especially exciting.
Autumn — September To November
Autumn is one of the most popular trekking seasons in Nepal.
After the monsoon, the skies are often clear, the air is fresh, and the mountain views are sharp and dramatic.
This season is ideal for photography, high-altitude trekking, and crossing the three passes in more stable conditions.

Challenging Seasons

Winter and monsoon are more challenging.
Winter can bring extreme cold, snow, icy trails, and possible pass closures.
Monsoon can bring rain, clouds, slippery trails, leeches in lower regions, and reduced mountain visibility.
High passes may become more difficult outside the main trekking seasons.
Trek O’Clock will always help recommend the most suitable season based on your experience, safety, and travel goals.

Your Everest Three High Passes journey includes private airport transfers and domestic flights as outlined in the itinerary.

  • Kathmandu to Lukla domestic flight during normal operations
  • Lukla to Kathmandu domestic flight during normal operations
  • Private transfer from airport to hotel after the trek

Important Flight Note

During busy trekking months, especially Spring and Autumn peak periods, Lukla flights may operate from Ramechhap / Manthali Airport instead of Kathmandu due to air traffic management.

If this applies, Trek O’Clock will arrange the necessary road transfers and flight logistics.

Weather conditions in the Himalayas can also affect flight schedules.

We recommend keeping at least one flexible day in your travel plan after the trek in case of delays.

The Everest Three High Passes Trek requires official trekking and conservation permits.

Permit rules and fees can change, so Trek O’Clock will confirm the latest requirements before your departure and arrange the necessary documentation for your trip.

Commonly Required Permits

Travellers should carry a valid passport and passport-sized photos or digital copies as required.

DETAILED ITINERARY Everest 3 High Passes Trek

Arrive in Nepal, where the energy of Kathmandu, ancient temples, and distant Himalayan dreams welcome you to the beginning of your adventure.

A Trek O’Clock representative will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

After check-in, relax from your journey, meet the team if time allows, and prepare for the expedition ahead.

Optional Activity: Kathmandu sightseeing

Today is dedicated to preparation, briefing, and final organisation before entering the Everest region.

After breakfast, meet your Trek O’Clock guide for a detailed trek briefing. Your guide will review the route, altitude profile, safety procedures, packing requirements, weather conditions, and daily expectations.

If you wish, an optional guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu can be arranged. This may include UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient temples, Buddhist stupas, and historic cultural landmarks.

The rest of the day is free for final gear checks, shopping, and rest.

Begin the Himalayan journey with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla.

The flight offers beautiful views of hills, valleys, rivers, and distant snow-covered peaks before landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport.

After meeting the porter team in Lukla, start trekking along the Dudh Koshi Valley.

The trail passes Chhuplung, Thado Koshi, Ghat, prayer walls, mani stones, suspension bridges, and peaceful village landscapes before reaching Phakding.

This first trekking day is gentle and designed to ease you into the rhythm of the journey.

Today the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through beautiful Sherpa villages including Toktok, Benkar, Monjo, and Jorsale.

At Monjo, enter Sagarmatha National Park, the protected mountain landscape that surrounds the Everest region.

The trail crosses several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge, before beginning the long ascent toward Namche Bazaar.

As you climb higher, the first distant glimpse of Everest may appear on a clear day.

Arrive at Namche Bazaar, the lively Sherpa capital of the Khumbu, surrounded by mountain walls, colourful lodges, bakeries, and trekking energy.

A carefully planned acclimatisation day helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude.

After breakfast, hike toward the Everest View Hotel, one of the most scenic viewpoints above Namche Bazaar.

On a clear day, enjoy beautiful views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and surrounding peaks.

Return to Namche for lunch and spend the afternoon exploring local bakeries, mountain shops, museums, and the vibrant Sherpa trading town.

This day follows the important mountain principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower.

Leave Namche and follow a scenic trail with outstanding views of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, and Thamserku.

The route passes Kyangjuma and descends toward Phunki Tenga before climbing steadily through rhododendron and pine forest to Tengboche.

Tengboche is one of the spiritual highlights of the Everest region.

In the evening, visit Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the Khumbu, where prayer chants, mountain views, and Buddhist traditions create a peaceful Himalayan atmosphere.

The trail descends through forest to Deboche before crossing the Imja Khola and continuing through Pangboche, one of the oldest Sherpa settlements in the region.

As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes more open, dry, and alpine.

The trail passes Somare and climbs gradually toward Dingboche, a beautiful high-altitude village surrounded by stone-walled fields and dramatic mountain views.

Island Peak, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam dominate the skyline as the air becomes thinner and the expedition atmosphere grows stronger.

Today is another essential acclimatisation day before moving deeper into the high Himalayas.

After breakfast, hike gradually toward a high viewpoint above Dingboche.

The climb offers magnificent views of Island Peak, Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and the surrounding Imja Valley.

Return to Dingboche for lunch and rest.

The afternoon is free to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the upcoming crossing of Kongma La Pass.

Today is the first major pass crossing of the expedition.

Begin early and follow a remote high-altitude trail toward Kongma La Pass. The route moves through rugged landscapes, rocky terrain, glacier views, and dramatic open mountain scenery.

The climb to Kongma La is demanding, but the reward is extraordinary.

From the top, enjoy powerful views of surrounding Himalayan peaks including Nuptse, Pumori, Lobuche Peak, Mera Peak, and the wild glacier valleys of the upper Khumbu.

After crossing the pass, descend carefully toward the Khumbu Glacier side and continue to Lobuche.

This is one of the most adventurous and rewarding days of the entire trek.

Today is one of the most iconic days of the journey.

Follow the trail along the Khumbu Glacier moraine toward Gorakshep, the final settlement before Everest Base Camp.

After lunch at Gorakshep, continue toward Everest Base Camp.

The trail crosses rocky moraine, glacier landscapes, and dramatic ice formations while enormous Himalayan walls rise around you.

Reaching Everest Base Camp is a powerful and emotional achievement.

During climbing season, colourful expedition tents may be visible across the base camp area, adding to the atmosphere of this legendary place.

After spending time at Base Camp, return carefully to Gorakshep for the night.

Begin before sunrise for the unforgettable hike to Kala Patthar.

Although challenging at high altitude, this climb offers one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalayas.

From the summit area, enjoy breathtaking close-up views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, Lhotse, and the surrounding peaks glowing in the early morning light.

After taking in the views, descend to Gorakshep and continue down through Lobuche and Thokla toward Dzongla.

Dzongla is a peaceful settlement surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and serves as the base before crossing Cho La Pass.

Today is the second major high pass crossing.

Start early and follow the trail toward Cho La Pass, one of the most adventurous sections of the Everest Three High Passes route.

The terrain includes rocky slopes, glacial sections, loose stone, and high mountain landscapes.

Depending on seasonal conditions, microspikes or crampons may be useful on icy sections.

The climb is demanding, but the pass rewards you with spectacular views of surrounding peaks, glaciers, and remote valleys.

After crossing Cho La, descend carefully toward Dragnag / Thagnak, a small settlement located near the Ngozumpa Glacier.

Today is shorter but incredibly scenic.

The trail crosses the dramatic Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, before gradually reaching the beautiful Gokyo Valley.

As you approach Gokyo, turquoise lakes appear beneath the surrounding mountains.

The village of Gokyo sits beside Dudh Pokhari, one of the famous Gokyo Lakes, creating one of the most peaceful and beautiful settings in the Everest region.

After the demanding previous days, this is a rewarding place to rest, recover, and enjoy the high Himalayan scenery.

Begin early for the optional hike to Gokyo Ri, one of the finest viewpoints in the Everest region.

The trail climbs steadily above Gokyo village, offering wider views with every step.

From the top, enjoy a spectacular panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Cholatse, the Gokyo Lakes, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.

After taking in the views, descend to Gokyo for breakfast or lunch.

The rest of the day is free to relax by the lake, explore the village, and prepare for the final high pass crossing.

Today brings the third and final great pass of the expedition.

Leave Gokyo and follow the trail along the northern side of the lake before climbing gradually toward Renjo La Pass.

The ascent is steady and demanding, but the scenery becomes more spectacular as you gain elevation.

From the top of Renjo La, the views are unforgettable.

Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, the Gokyo Lakes, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks stretch across the horizon in one of the most beautiful panoramas of the trek.

After crossing the pass, descend carefully toward the remote valley of Lungden.

This day marks the completion of all three high passes.

Follow the ancient trade route along the Bhote Koshi Valley, once used by Tibetan traders travelling between Tibet and the Khumbu.

The trail passes through peaceful villages, stone houses, mani walls, and mountain landscapes before reaching Thame.

After lunch or a short break, continue toward Namche Bazaar.

Returning to Namche after many days in the high mountains feels like a celebration.

Enjoy warm food, bakeries, cafes, and the comfort of the lively Sherpa capital.

Today is the final trekking day.

Descend from Namche through forests, suspension bridges, river valleys, and villages including Jorsale, Monjo, Phakding, Ghat, and Chhuplung.

The trail gradually returns to Lukla, where the expedition first began.

In the evening, celebrate the successful completion of the Everest Three High Passes Trek with your guide, porters, and fellow trekkers.

This is a special moment to reflect on the journey, the challenges, the mountain views, and the achievement of crossing three high Himalayan passes.

Fly back to Kathmandu, enjoying final views of the Khumbu mountains from the air.

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a well-earned rest.

The afternoon is free for souvenir shopping, spa treatments, local exploration, or simply relaxing after the expedition.

In the evening, join Trek O’Clock for a farewell dinner celebrating your successful Himalayan journey.

Note: During peak trekking months, Lukla flights may operate via Ramechhap / Manthali Airport instead of Kathmandu. If this applies, Trek O’Clock will arrange the necessary transfers and logistics.

After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your international departure.

If you are extending your stay in Nepal, Trek O’Clock can assist with additional tours, cultural experiences, trekking extensions, or relaxation stays.
