Some journeys are famous because they are crowded.

Others remain unforgettable because they feel peaceful, pure, and deeply connected to the mountains.

The Gokyo Ri Trek is one of those rare Himalayan journeys.

This trek begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, where the trail immediately enters the world of the Khumbu.

From Lukla, walk through peaceful villages, forests, prayer stones, suspension bridges, and river valleys before reaching Phakding.

The trail continues through Monjo and Jorsale before entering Sagarmatha National Park and climbing to Namche Bazaar.

Namche is the lively Sherpa capital of the Everest region, surrounded by mountain ridges, bakeries, lodges, markets, and beautiful viewpoints.

After an important acclimatisation day in Namche, the route leaves the busier Everest Base Camp trail and turns toward the quieter Gokyo Valley.

The trail climbs gradually through Dole and Machermo, passing yak pastures, alpine ridges, Sherpa settlements, and wide mountain landscapes.

As the journey moves higher, the scenery becomes more open, remote, and dramatic.

Reaching Gokyo feels like entering another world.

The village sits beside a beautiful turquoise lake, surrounded by snow-covered peaks and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier.

The highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Gokyo Ri.

At 5,357 metres, Gokyo Ri offers one of the most extraordinary mountain panoramas in Nepal.

From the viewpoint, travellers can see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Cholatse, the Gokyo Lakes, and the immense Ngozumpa Glacier stretching through the valley.

After soaking in the views, the trail descends back through Dole, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla, completing a peaceful and highly rewarding Everest region journey.

This trek is not only about seeing Everest.

It is about experiencing the quiet beauty of Gokyo, the power of the glaciers, the warmth of Sherpa culture, and the unforgettable feeling of standing above one of the most beautiful valleys in the Himalayas.

At Trek O’Clock, our experienced guides support you throughout the journey with steady pacing, rest stops, hydration reminders, altitude awareness, and encouragement.

Spring & Autumn Seasons

The best seasons for the Gokyo Ri Trek are Spring and Autumn.

These periods usually offer stable weather, clearer mountain views, and comfortable trekking conditions.

Spring — March To May

Spring brings warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendron forests in lower regions, longer daylight hours, and colourful mountain scenery.

This is one of the most beautiful times to enjoy the lower Everest region and the approach toward Gokyo.

Autumn — September To November

Autumn is one of the most popular trekking seasons in Nepal.

After the monsoon, the skies are often clear, the air is fresh, and the mountain views are sharp and dramatic.

This season is ideal for photography, high-altitude trekking, and clear views from Gokyo Ri.

Challenging Seasons

Winter and monsoon are more challenging.

Winter can bring cold mornings, snow at higher areas, icy trails, and shorter daylight hours.

Monsoon can bring rain, clouds, slippery trails, leeches in lower regions, and reduced mountain visibility.

Trek O’Clock will always help recommend the most suitable season based on your comfort, safety, and travel goals.

Your Gokyo Ri Trek includes private airport transfers and domestic flights as outlined in the itinerary.

Included Transportation

  • Lukla to Kathmandu domestic flight during normal operations

If this applies, Trek O’Clock will arrange the necessary road transfers and flight logistics.

Weather conditions in the Himalayas can also affect flight schedules.

We recommend keeping at least one flexible day in your travel plan after the trek in case of delays.

The Gokyo Ri Trek requires official trekking and conservation permits.

The rest of the day is free for gear checks, shopping, and rest before the trek begins.

Flight Duration: Approx. 45 minutes

Begin your Himalayan journey with a scenic flight to Lukla.
The flight offers beautiful views of hills, valleys, rivers, and distant snow-covered peaks before landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport.
After meeting the porter team in Lukla, begin trekking along the Dudh Koshi Valley.
The trail passes Chhuplung, Thado Koshi, Ghat, prayer stones, mani walls, suspension bridges, and peaceful village landscapes before reaching Phakding.
This first trekking day is gentle and designed to ease you into the rhythm of the mountains.

Today the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through beautiful Sherpa villages including Toktok, Benkar, Monjo, and Jorsale.

At Monjo, enter Sagarmatha National Park, the protected mountain landscape surrounding the Everest region.

The route crosses several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge, before beginning the steady climb toward Namche Bazaar.

This ascent is one of the first real challenges of the trek, but the scenery and mountain atmosphere make it incredibly rewarding.

Arrive at Namche Bazaar, the lively Sherpa capital of the Khumbu, surrounded by mountain ridges, colourful lodges, bakeries, cafes, and trekking energy.

Highest Hiking Point: Approx. 3,880 m — Everest View Hotel

A carefully planned acclimatisation day helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude while giving you one of the best short hikes in the Everest region.
After breakfast, hike toward Everest View Hotel, a famous viewpoint above Namche Bazaar.
On a clear day, enjoy wonderful views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde Ri, and surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Return to Namche for lunch and spend the afternoon exploring local bakeries, mountain shops, cafes, museums, and the lively Sherpa trading town.
This day follows the important mountain principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower.

Leave the main Everest Base Camp trail and begin following the quieter route toward the Gokyo Valley.

The trail climbs toward Kyangjuma and the Mong La ridge, offering beautiful views across the Khumbu landscape.

This area is also known for Himalayan wildlife, and lucky trekkers may spot Nepal’s national bird, the colourful Himalayan monal, as well as musk deer or Himalayan tahr.

After crossing scenic ridgelines and descending through forested sections, continue through small settlements and yak pasture landscapes before reaching Dole.

The atmosphere becomes quieter and more remote as you move deeper into the Gokyo route.

Today the trail follows the side of the valley through increasingly open alpine terrain.

As you gain altitude, forests gradually thin and the landscapes become wider, colder, and more dramatic.

Pass through areas such as Lhabarma Kharka and Luza before continuing along the ridge toward Machermo.

The views of the valley are beautiful, and Cho Oyu begins to dominate the distant skyline.

Machermo is a peaceful high-altitude settlement surrounded by mountain scenery, making it an important overnight stop before reaching Gokyo.

Today is one of the most beautiful days of the trek.

The trail continues through high alpine landscapes toward the Gokyo Valley, passing Pangka and approaching the vast Ngozumpa Glacier.

As you move higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with glacier-made rivers, rocky trails, and beautiful lakes appearing along the route.

The turquoise Gokyo Lakes create one of the most stunning natural settings in the Everest region.

Continue to the eastern shore of Dudh Pokhari, where the village of Gokyo sits peacefully beside the lake.

Arriving in Gokyo is a special moment.

The combination of blue water, glacier views, and surrounding mountains creates an unforgettable Himalayan atmosphere.

Highest Point: 5,357 m — Gokyo Ri

Begin early for the unforgettable hike to Gokyo Ri.
The trail climbs steadily above Gokyo village, and the views become more impressive with every step.
Although the climb is challenging at altitude, the reward from the top is extraordinary.
From Gokyo Ri, enjoy panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Cholatse, the Gokyo Lakes, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.
This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire Everest region.
After spending time at the viewpoint, descend carefully back to Gokyo.
The rest of the day is free to relax by the lake, enjoy the peaceful village atmosphere, and celebrate the highest point of your journey.

Leave Gokyo and begin descending through the beautiful high valleys of the Gokyo region.

The trail passes through Machermo and Luza, with excellent views across the Dudh Koshi Valley, surrounding hillsides, and distant Himalayan peaks.

As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape gradually softens from high alpine terrain into yak pastures and mountain settlements.

Arrive at Dole for a peaceful overnight stay.

Continue descending through the beautiful Gokyo Valley route.

The trail passes through rhododendron and pine forest, Sherpa settlements, yak pastures, and scenic viewpoints before gradually reconnecting with the main Everest trail.

Depending on route conditions, you may pass areas such as Phortse Tenga, Mong La, and Kyangjuma before returning toward Namche Bazaar.

Arriving back in Namche after many days in the high mountains feels like a celebration.

Enjoy warm meals, bakeries, cafes, mountain shops, and the comfort of the lively Sherpa capital.

Today is the final trekking day.

Descend from Namche through forests, suspension bridges, river valleys, and villages including Jorsale, Monjo, Phakding, Ghat, and Chhuplung.

Exit Sagarmatha National Park and continue gradually toward Lukla.

The final day is a chance to reflect on the Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, Ngozumpa Glacier, Sherpa villages, mountain views, and the achievement of completing your journey.

In the evening, celebrate the successful trek with your guide, porters, and fellow travellers.

Transfer Duration: 30–45 minutes

Fly back to Kathmandu, enjoying final views of the Khumbu region from the air.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a well-earned rest.
The afternoon is free for souvenir shopping, spa treatments, local exploration, or simply relaxing after the trek.
In the evening, join Trek O’Clock for a farewell dinner celebrating your successful Himalayan journey.
Note: During peak trekking months, Lukla flights may operate via Ramechhap / Manthali Airport instead of Kathmandu. If this applies, Trek O’Clock will arrange the necessary transfers and logistics.

After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your international departure.

If you are extending your stay in Nepal, Trek O’Clock can assist with additional tours, cultural experiences, trekking extensions, or relaxation stays.
